In our Department of Basic Medical Sciences, both theoretical and practice-based courses are conducted by the affiliated departments within the scope of basic medical sciences education. Through these courses, our students are expected to gain extensive knowledge about the structure of the human body, the structures, functions, and mechanisms of various body systems, as well as the biological/physiological mechanisms that lead to the development of diseases. Basic medical sciences education not only provides our students with a broad understanding and vision regarding the concepts of health and disease but also prepares them for clinical practice. In addition, our departments aim to offer specialization training/graduate education within the framework of medical specialty, master’s, and doctoral programs. The faculty members of our department carry out various research projects and contribute to the scientific literature by transforming their findings into national and international publications. Our department consists of the following sub-departments: Anatomy, Biophysics, Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, Physiology, Histology and Embryology, Immunology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Biology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Education, History of Medicine, and Medical Ethics. Currently, our department includes a total of 14 faculty members: 2 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, and 8 Assistant Professors. The department was established in 2022. Between February 2022 and November 2023, Assoc. Prof. Hasan Basri Savaş served as the Head of Department, and since November 16, 2023, this position has been held by Prof. Dr. Erdal Tunç.

Mission
Our Department of Basic Medical Sciences undertakes the majority of the first three years of undergraduate medical education. In addition, it aims to train graduate students through postgraduate programs. The departments under our division continue their activities with all available resources, adhering to the principle of providing high-quality and innovative education to our students, who will become the physicians of the future. Moreover, the faculty members conduct various research projects and contribute to the scientific literature and our country’s international visibility in this field by transforming their findings into national and international publications.
