Course Objective :The main objective of the course is to discuss ideas about, and explanations of, international relations, concentrating mainly on the major theoretical approaches in the academic study of international relations. The key theories and approaches to be examined include: realism and neo-realism; theories about war, security and the use of force in international relations; classical liberalism, globalization, and transformation in world politics; theories about inter-state co-operation and transnationalism; the concept of international society; constructivism and the impact of law and norms in international relations; Marxist and critical theory approaches to international relations. Course Objective : The first aim of this course is to analyze the colonial order of the Middle East which was shaped by England and France after the First World War I. The role of expanding US influence after World War II on the politics of the region will also be investigated. The course will pay special attention to the formation of nation states, the formation of political borders in the region after WW1 and how these elements affected the post war political establishment of the Middle East region. The final aim of the course is to enable students to comprehend the complex issues of Middle East politics and also able analyze ‘inter-regional’ and ‘inter-national’ interventions in the region through historical process.

First, the political and social conditions that brought about the Renaissance, reform, enlightenment and humanism are analyzed, then the views of the thinkers who have left their mark on different currents of thought are emphasized. In the course, Machiavelli, Jean Bodin, Thomas Hobbes, J. J. Rousseau and Hegel are analyzed in the name of absolutist political thought while Karl Marx and Gramsci in the context of socialist thought; John Locke, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls within the scope of liberal thought; Edmund Burke, David Hume and Joseph de Maistre in the name of conservative political thought.

Course Objective: In this course, it is aimed to equip students with skills to present a research in accordance with the written and oral presentation rules. By emphasizing the steps that should be followed while conducting a research project, the course aims to give a full framework of the picture regarding research methods in the field of social science in general and in International Relations in particular.. For these purposes, the steps to be followed from the early stage of determining a research subject to the formation of the research hypotheses, the execution of the research process, the application and writing stage of the research are particularly and explicitly examined. In this course, it is explained how to present a research text in a academic conference in accordance with academic oral presentation rules. Some of the topics that will be discussed in the course are as follows: Quantitative and qualitative research techniques, science and ethics, science and morality, preparing and presenting research assignments, project, article and thesis writing.

Course Title :POLITICAL STRUCTURE AND INSTITUTIONS IN THE OTTOMAN STATE

Course Objective: The aim of the course is to give students information about the political transformation of the Ottoman State during its life span and to show how and in what manner the distribution of political power among different actors and institutions within the political structure changed over time. Absolute authority of the sultan, devşirme, kul and tımar system are discussed concerning the classical period of the empire. After that, the distribution of the political power between the sultan and the palace is examined. With the reform movements that began in the 19th century, the emergence of Bab-ı Ali as an important center of power, the role of the powerful grand viziers, the emergence of parliaments, the Tanzimat parliaments, the local assemblies, the role of the Meclis-i Mebusan, the constitutionalism, limitation of monarchy, parliamentarism and finally political societies, socialization of politics, Young Turks, emergence of middle class as a political power and massification of political power.

Course Objective : The course will focus on political developments in the region in the post Cold War era. The course will cover the political and international development in the region after the Second World War and then will focus on the cases and phenomenons as follow: The first Gulf War or Gulf War II, the impact of the September 11 attacks on international system and how this historical attack in the USA changed the concept of terrorism and this change influenced Middle East region. In addition, the sociological and economic factors that led to the Arab Spring process that emerged after 2010 and the consequences of the Arab Spring process in the region will also be deeply discussed. The final aim of the course is to discuss the radical systemic change in the Middle Eastern security architecture after the Cold War and to analyze its consequences in the foreign policies of regional powers such as Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Course Objective: In this course, first of all, the institutional structures, state ideologies and views on religion-state relations of the Great Seljuk, Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman sultanates will be explained. Later, within the scope of Ottoman modernization, reforms of III. Selim and II. Mahmut periods, Tanzimat Edict, Reform Edict, Young Ottomans, I. Constitutional Era, II. Abdülhamit Period, Committee of Union and Progress, II. Constitutional Monarchy, War of Independence and the Single Party Periods will be discussed. In addition to these movements of change in Ottoman and Republican political life, political phenomena and trends such as modernization, Westernism, Liberalism, Centralism, Decentralization, Islamism, Ottomanism, Turkism, legislative movements, assemblies, conception of citizenship, bureaucratization, constitutionalism, republicanism will be addressed. The course particularly dwells on the impact of socio-economic transformation in the social structure on political transformation.

Course Objective: The emergence of political parties, their historical and social origins and ontological differences of political parties will be explored as the first aim of this course. The roles of parties in expressing and binding different interests in society, the process of transforming those interests into coherent policies or political point of views and execution of those policies in the real political arena are followed and investigated. It is also a fundamental aim of this course to understand the relationship between pressure groups and political parties, how political parties function in society such as representation, elite formation, socialization and mobilization, and how they manifest government forming once they come to power in the political structure. Furthermore, the course gives some examples over different kinds of election and party systems throughout the world and the characteristics of one-party, two-party and multi-party systems are examined through these examples.

Course Objective : This course concentrates on the political dimension of gender after covering different approaches to the concept of gender. Concepts such as individual, citizenship, state, human rights, social relations, family, freedom, public and private sphere are analyzed from the gender perspective. The course also deals with women's movements which have diverse discourses. The distinctive features of the first, second and third waves developed within the women's movements, their similarities and divergences, and the main discourses of each of them are analyzed in this regard. After making general analyzes about gender and women's movements, the course focuses on the relationship between gender and politics in Turkey and the discourses of different women's movements that have developed there.

Course Objective : It is aimed that the student will become familiar with the field of peripheral political thought. On the one hand, environmentalist movements, activist groups and the emergence of environmentalist political parties will be discussed, on the other hand, efforts will be made to give the student an idea of various environmentalist / ecologist thought movements. For this purpose, the birth of the Sierra Club, German scouting and the Anti-Nuclear Movement, German and French green parties and thought currents such as eco-feminism, eco-socialism, eco-liberalism, eco-anarchism will be examined. More importantly, in the general evaluation of the course, it will be emphasized that the dominant thought currents in our world, which has tumbled into a deep food and energy crisis with climate change, internalize the ecological perspective by taking into account the criticisms and warnings from this flank.

Course Objective: The main concern of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts and theories of political communication. Therefore, this course proceeds under three main headings: Political communication in the media, political campaigns and the effects of political communication. Course Objective : Historically, most of the world’s political regimes have been authoritarian. First time in the history of the world, in the post-cold war era, democratic regimes outnumbered authoritarian ones according to well-known democracy indices. However, the same indices also indicate that roughly forty percent of all political regimes are authoritarian, and half of the world population live under authoritarian rule. Since its conceptualization by Juan J. Linz in 1964, authoritarian regimes have been one of the major themes of political science. Yet still as Adam Przeworski states “dictatorships are by far the most understudied area in comparative politics.” Although the course also examines democratic and totalitarian regimes, its focus will be authoritarian regimes to fill that gap. The course will begin with different conceptual and theoretical perspectives on democracy. Theoretical framework of totalitarian regimes and their practices will follow. Thereafter the course will focus on authoritarian regimes beginning with examination of different conceptualization and typologies of classical authoritarian regimes. Theoretical framework and conceptualization of “transition paradigm,” “democracies with adjectives,” “hybrid regimes,” and “defective democracies” will be examined next. The course will conclude with examination of the theoretical framework of Andreas Schedler’s “electoral authoritarianism,” and Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way’s “competitive authoritarianism.” The course aims to enable students to understand what democracy is and what is it not; theoretical framework and practices of different types of authoritarian regimes; how authoritarianism emerge; how democratic and autocratic breakdowns happens; autocrat’s strategies of survival in power and how they fail; what are the formal and informal institutions and dynamics of different political regimes etc.
