Hours/Week : 3+0 Hours/Week
ECTS Credits : 6
Language : Turkish
Course Content : The aim is to introduce the student to the work published in 4 volumes under the main title "The Modern World-System" between 1982 and 2011, to discuss the arguments developed therein, and to evaluate the criticisms brought by contemporary authors against world-systems theory. Utilizing the "world-economy" approach of the French historian Fernand Braudel, Wallerstein traces the origins of the capitalist economy and political-military dominance built step by step by the West from the 16th century onward, examining the world-system in 4 phases: 1- Capitalist Agriculture and the European Centered World-Economy (16th Century), 2- Mercantilism and the Consolidation of the World-Economy (1600-1750), 3- The Second Great Expansion of the Capitalist World-Economy (1730-1840), 4- The Triumph of Moderate Liberalism (1789-1914). Throughout the course, these four phases will be evaluated with a critical eye; how the geographies termed by Wallerstein as "core" (the Western world, founder of the world-economy) and "periphery" (colonized Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia) were affected by an asymmetrically functioning world-economy will be investigated.
