Course Title              : METHOD IN SOCIAL SCIENCE

Course Objective: The main purpose of this course is to determine the research problem and to teach the steps to be followed in order to conduct research on a particular subject by creating a theoretical framework, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting the results and creating knowledge about the main research methods in social sciences. Before starting to do research on a subject, it is emphasized how to determine the research subject, how to form the questions and hypotheses about this research, how to collect and analyze the data related to the research, what the evaluation and writing techniques of the research are. In this course, the difference between a scientific work and a non-scientific work is discussed in a comparative way in accordance with the written and oral presentation rules. The course will also cover all qualitative and quantitative research methods that are required for a postgraduate degree.

Course Title              : THEORIES OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

Course Objective: The aim of this graduate seminar is (1) to explain European integration, conceptualized as the construction and evolution of the European Communities and the European Union, as defined, understood, and anticipated by several social science theories; and (2) to analyze and account for the various theories that have addressed European integration and its outcomes. This course presupposes basic knowledge of the EC/EU history and institutions.

Course Title              : MIDDLE EAST POLITICS

Course Objective      : The course will focus on developments in Middle Eastern politics from the post-Ottoman era to the present. Starting from the post-WWI period to Colonial processes in the region, the formation of nation states and the borders of these states will be analyzed in accordance with how these changes shaped Middle East Politics in this period . In addition, the emergence and development of political concepts and movements in the Middle East Region, such as Wahhabism, Shiite revisionism and Muslim brothers, will be covered deeply in the course. The final aim of the course is to enable students to comprehend complex dynamics of regional politics which are in many ways shaping  regional and global issues of our time.

Course Title                          : COMPARATIVE POLITICS

Course Objective: The fundamental issues of comparative politics such as nation-state, democracy, political parties, political culture, political economy, electoral systems, social movements, ethnic and identity debates are handled comparatively in the course. Pictures of each of these topics in different countries are presented. In addition, the political systems of the major countries from different continents, which are a model in terms of their historical background, political culture, state-society relationship and institutional structure, are analyzed. In this context, the political structures of countries such as the USA, Britain, France, Federal Germany, Russian Federation, Japan, China, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Iran are examined.

Course Title                          : MODERN WORLD SYSTEM

Course Objective: Immanual Wallerstein develops a theoretical framework to understand the historical changes involved in the rise of the modern world. The modern world system, essentially capitalist in nature, followed the crisis of the feudal system and helps explain the rise of Western Europe to world supremacy between 1450 and 1840. According to Wallerstein, his theory makes possible a comprehensive understanding of the external and internal manifestations of the modernization process during this period and makes possible analytically sound comparisons between different parts of the world. The course is devoted to scholarly study of various versions of world-systems analysis and its application to macrosocial and global processes and systems.

Course Objective: In this course, the basic topics of political theory such as individual, human, society, nation, state, sovereignty, government, freedom, justice, equality, legitimacy and national liberation are discussed from different perspectives. Liberal, authoritarian, socialist, conservative, feminist and postmodern approach on each of these issues is elaborated in this regard. The similarities and differences between different schools and ideologies are topics covered in the course. The course also focuses on the changes and transformations of political theory throughout history, as well as on the views of the political philosophers who came to the fore in this process.

Course Title                          : SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

Course Objective: This course focuses on the structure, character, functions, change and transformation of social movements as well as their relationship with political power. The course firstly examines the classical social movements developing on an economic basis in the industrial society, and then the social movements that developed over post-material values ​​after the Second World War. The course also emphasizes "new social movements" that are organized in the digital platform in the global society, communicate through social media networks and reveal massive reactions. The importance and functions of social movements in terms of democratic structure, social relations, individual belonging and self-realization are the other issues that the course covers.

Course Title             : TURKEY’S POLITICAL STRUCTURE

Course Hours/Week : 3 Hours/ Week

Course Objective:  In this course, first of all, the institutional structures, state ideologies and views on religion-state relations of the Great Seljuk, Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman sultanates will be explained. Later, within the scope of Ottoman and Turkish modernization, reforms and reform movements will be discussed. Kemalist policies and the transformation of political life in Turkey since the establishment of the multiparty system (1945-2015) will be outlined at the level of institutions and main lines of thought. In this context, considering important turning points of the period, significant actors in the political life of Turkey, political currents and ideas, main political parties and movements will be discussed along with the transformation of socio-economic life. The course, with a process oriented approach, aims that the students learn important events and developments in the transformation of political life in Turkey, main currents of thought, actors and institutions.

Course Title              : INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Course Objective      : The course will focus on the processes that lead to the emergence of the concept of security in international relations. In addition, theoretical approaches to the concept of international security and the factors and the elements that lead to change in international security will be analyzed in this course. The expansion of the concept of security after the Cold War and the emergence of environmental, social and economic security approaches will be discussed. The final aim of the course is to provide students with the concepts of basic parameters of international security and to analyze the events occurring in global politics within this concept.

Course Title             : CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Course Objective: This course aims to explain the resolution methods of inter-state conflicts and intra-conflicts, such as ethnic, sectarian etc.. Therefore, the course will concentrate on the theoretical literature on conflict resolution and different case studies, actors and processes. In the course, conflict resolution will be discussed on the intellectual basis of the conflict management and conflict transformation. Negotiation, mediation, ceasefire and peace agreements will be conveyed with examples around the world, and peace theories, concepts (peacebuilding, peacemaking, and peacekeeping) and critical approaches will be detailed. It is aimed that students prepare an original research on the conflict resolution and transformation subject at the end of course.

Course Title                          : THEORIES AND MODELS OF DEMOCRACY

Course Objective: This course examines the historical development, intellectual background, processes, mechanisms, values, actors and dynamics of modern democracy. Crises experienced by modern democracy on issues such as representation, participation and power distribution and alternative democracy models developed in the face of these crises are also emphasized. In this context, discussions on liberal democracy, social democracy, deliberative democracy, radical democracy, inclusive democracy, local democracy and participatory democracy as well as the similarities and differences between them are among the topics that the course focuses on.

Course Title              : THEORIES OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Course Objective      : The course will focus on the theoretical approaches that have emerged and influenced the discipline of International Relations since ancient Greece. After a short introduction to the historical roots of International relations theories, the course will focus on the mainstream theoretical approaches such as Realism, Idealism, Marxism, English School and Constructivism. The final aim of the course is to enable students to comprehend these theoretical approaches and then to analyze some special cases in the light of these theoretical concepts.
