Mardin Artuklu University continues its awareness-raising efforts as part of its "Zero Waste Project ." Adding to its existing efforts focused on environmental protection, green campus, and zero waste, the university has launched a new initiative, in collaboration with the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, to recycle organic waste.
Founded on June 14, 2021, our university aims to protect the environment, raise environmental awareness among students and local people, and leave a livable world for future generations.
In studies conducted by our university's Zero Waste and Environmental Management Coordination , a Compost Unit placed on campus is recycling organic waste such as food scraps, garden branches, leaves, wood chips, and grass. Information about the composting device's operating system has also been shared as part of the project:
Biodegradable waste generated during the meal preparation phase in the cafeteria kitchen, tea pulp from the teahouses and organic waste collected from the garden are first placed in a perforated straining container to reduce their liquid content in order to be converted into compost product.
After the filtered waste is weighed, an appropriate amount of sawdust is added to balance the moisture content.
The compost machine consists of two parts: a feeding and a maturation chamber . Waste broken down in the feeding chamber is transferred to the maturation chamber, where maturation is completed after a 15-day feeding process.
By processing an average of 1000 kg of waste, 180-200 kg of compost product is obtained in approximately 30 days, and this product is used as a soil conditioner in university green areas .
This practice has reduced the disposal burden of organic waste and has introduced an environmentally friendly recycling model within the university, embracing a circular economy . Thus, our university continues to raise awareness of its zero-waste goals at both the local and institutional levels .
