Our Department of Art History was founded in 2009 and began admitting students in 2011. Within our department, which delivers 30% of its curriculum in English, students undergo initial preparatory training. Subsequently, they pursue a four-year education in art history, culminating in graduation with the designation of Art Historian. Our department comprises four distinct branches: Turkish Islamic Art, General Art History, Byzantine Art, and Contemporary and Western Art.
The primary objective of our Art History Department is to offer students a comprehensive perspective on art within a broad cultural context. Our aim is to cultivate skilled researchers capable of applying their art historical education effectively, contributing to the preservation and continued transmission of artistic works to future generations.
Among our esteemed faculty members, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Evindar Yeşilbaş serves as the scientific advisor for the Mardin Castle Excavation, a significant site in Anatolia, while Assoc. Dr. Zekai Erdal leads the Hasankeyf Archaeological Excavations. Students in our program have the opportunity to intern at these excavations and other institutions of their choosing.
Mardin's rich historical and cultural heritage presents a unique advantage for students interested in studying art history. The city, akin to an open-air museum, provides a practical environment for students to comprehend theoretical concepts and gain hands-on experience.
