ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

History

The Department of Art History was established in 2009 and began admitting students in 2011. Students placed in the program according to the results of the national university entrance examinations administered by ÖSYM (TYT and AYT) undertake a five-year course of study. Since 30% of the curriculum is delivered in English, students first complete a preparatory year. Those who successfully pass the preparatory program then continue with a four-year Art History curriculum and, upon graduation, receive a bachelor’s degree with the title of Art Historian.

The department consists of four main divisions: Turkish and Islamic Arts, General Art History, Byzantine Art, and Western and Contemporary Art. Currently, the academic staff includes one Professor, two Associate Professors, five Assistant Professors (PhD), and two Research Assistants, making a total of ten faculty members.

The primary goal of the Department of Art History is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of art within a broad cultural context, to develop a strong and informed perspective on art, and to train qualified researchers capable of competently applying art historical knowledge, as well as contributing effectively to the conservation and transmission of cultural heritage.

The historical and cultural richness of the city of Mardin offers an exceptional opportunity for students of Art History. As a city that may be regarded as an open-air museum, Mardin allows theoretical knowledge to be directly observed, experienced, and internalized through on-site learning.

Employment

Graduates of the Department of Art History can pursue careers in various public and private institutions involved in the preservation, documentation, and interpretation of cultural heritage. They may work as art historians, experts, or researchers in organizations such as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, museums, archaeological and historical sites, Cultural Heritage Preservation Boards, municipal cultural and promotion departments, and foundations.

Additionally, graduates have opportunities to work as project specialists, documentation officers, or consultants in public institutions and private-sector organizations operating in the fields of restoration and conservation. Those who complete a pedagogical formation program may work as teachers in secondary education; while postgraduate studies allow graduates to pursue an academic career path (research assistant, lecturer, or faculty member).

Furthermore, graduates may be employed as cultural consultants, curatorial support staff, or specialists in art galleries, auction houses, cultural and art centers, research institutes, and within the tourism sector.
