Mardin Artuklu University held the third Science Café Meeting series, which was carried out within the scope of the Science Communication Mobilization initiated by the Council of Higher Education (YOK).
At the event, Associate Professor Dr. Hakan Akelma, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation at Mardin Artuklu University Faculty of Medicine, met with attendees with his presentation titled "Secrets of Anesthesia."
The event, held in the Science Café area of the Scientific Communications Office of the Corporate Communications Coordinatorship, explained the behind-the-scenes processes of anesthesia, one of the most important areas of modern medicine, how consciousness is controlled, and how painless surgery becomes possible.
In his speech, Assoc. Professor Dr. Hakan Akelma stated that anesthesia is not only a medical practice but also an art form that manages consciousness, stating:
"Anesthesia shuts off pain; it opens life. Surgery is a conscious intervention in the human body; anesthesia is the regulator that protects the body, silences pain, and manages consciousness."
Assoc. Professor Dr. Akelma also touched on the historical development of anesthesia, saying: He explained the process from Ibn Sina's theoretical contributions to the discovery of ether, from John Snow's scientific approaches to modern monitoring technologies.
He also emphasized that the misinformation about the state of alertness under anesthesia is inconsistent with reality, and that the risk is quite low in modern medicine.
The event continued interactively, attracting considerable interest from students and participants.
Science Café Meetings, coordinated by Mardin Artuklu University's Science Communication Office, will continue to be held regularly as a platform aimed at connecting science with society in a simple and engaging way.
