Support for the Future of Medicine from MAU

Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran, Head of the Department of General Surgery at Mardin Artuklu University Faculty of Medicine and also Coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems Unit and the Entrepreneurship and Company Formation Unit at the Technology Transfer Office, has been selected as a member of the European Physician Advisory Board 2025, established by Elsevier, one of the world's most prestigious academic publishers, becoming one of eight individuals who will shape Europe's health vision.

With over 140 years of history in scientific publishing, Elsevier is now a major academic information and technology organization operating in more than 180 countries and publishing over 600,000 peer-reviewed articles annually. Today, Elsevier, where more than 99% of Nobel Prize-winning scientists publish their work, is recognized as one of the most reliable sources in medicine and science.

The company's European Physician Advisory Board 2025 special committee includes only eight distinguished physicians and academics from different European countries. The eight-member committee, which includes MAU Faculty of Medicine Department of General Surgery Chair Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran and leading European academics, will prepare a strategic report called the White Paper, which will chart the future course of medicine in the areas of innovation in healthcare, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.

Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran, Head of the General Surgery Department at MAU Faculty of Medicine, stated that they held their first meeting online on September 15, bringing together the eight committee members to share their views on innovation in healthcare, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation, and to hold preliminary discussions for the White Paper.

Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran said that once the White Paper report is completed, it will be possible to perform diagnosis and treatment processes with minimal error in the medicine of the future.

Baran also stated that the report to be prepared will outline the roadmap for the future across a wide range of areas, from artificial intelligence applications in healthcare to personalized treatments, big data analysis, and digital health systems.

Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran, a general surgery specialist at MAU Faculty of Medicine, known for his work on artificial intelligence and medical integration, and also a pioneer in machine learning, deep learning, computer imaging, and predictive modeling, provided information about the important names on the board, stating the following:

"The board includes names from different European countries. Dr. Wouter De Corte from Belgium conducts research in the field of artificial intelligence at KULeuven; in addition to being an intensive care and anesthesia specialist, he plays a leading role in digital health transformation. Prof. Dr. Edouard Battegay from Switzerland is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Zurich and one of Europe's leading figures in the field of multimorbidity and complex disease management. Dr. Richard Daniels from the United Kingdom works as a pediatric specialist at St. Mary's Hospital in London and conducts research on clinical innovation and digital health solutions. Dr. Wassilissa Golowatjuk from Switzerland is an expert in radiology and neuroradiology and is involved in innovative projects in AI-supported imaging technologies.

Prof. Dr. Claudio Ronco from Italy is a world-renowned authority on kidney failure and artificial organ technologies as Director of the Vicenza International Nephrology Research Institute. Dr. Stefan Jovinge from Sweden conducts research in stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine as Head of Research and Innovation at Skåne University Hospitals. Dr. Sheeba Bhatia from the United Kingdom is a psychiatrist conducting research on the integration of artificial intelligence into clinical decision support systems for mental health treatments. I believe that our board, composed of such a well-equipped team, will make significant contributions to the redesign of healthcare services on a global scale.

Mardin Artuklu University Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar stated that Dr. Mehmet Tarık Baran, an academic at MAU Faculty of Medicine, will represent Turkey on this prestigious board and make our country's voice heard in the international scientific community not only in the field of surgery but also in AI-supported healthcare applications, wishing him continued success.
