MAU Achieves Internationally Patented Success

"Mardin Artuklu University has achieved a significant internationally recognized success in strengthening the use of renewable energy in agricultural production."

The "Mobile Solar-Powered Irrigation Machine," developed by Dr. Ümran Atay, Assistant Professor in the Machine Program at the Organized Industrial Zone Vocational School (OSB MYO), has been registered with a patent by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. This solar-powered mobile system enables the more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly application of drip and sprinkler irrigation methods in agricultural areas. Offering significant advantages, particularly in reducing energy costs and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the invention directly contributes to rural development and green transformation goals. Dr. Atay stated that the system she developed provides economic benefits to producers by reducing energy dependence and creates added value for the national economy. She emphasized that the widespread use of renewable energy in agriculture is of strategic importance both environmentally and economically.

The invention in question had previously received an unexamined patent under the TÜBİTAK 1001 project led by Atay at the GAP Agricultural Research Institute; the work, which continues to be developed through international research, was registered with an examined patent on January 21, 2026, under registration number TR 2013 00444 B. The Director of the Organized Industrial Zone Vocational School, Prof. Dr. Ferhat Kızılgeçi, expressed his satisfaction that the scientific and technological outputs of the faculty members contribute to both academic development and the national economy, emphasizing that studies in the fields of sustainable agriculture and renewable energy will continue to be supported. Mardin Artuklu University Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar made the following assessment:

“Our university will continue to support innovative projects in line with its vision of regional development and sustainability. The international dimension of this patent not only makes our university's scientific production power visible on a global scale, but also brings regional development together with global sustainability goals by encouraging international academic and industrial collaborations. Mardin Artuklu University aims to guide not only regional development but also global scientific progress with the projects it has developed in the field of sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.
Considering the need for energy in rural areas, especially in developing Middle Eastern and African countries, this invention is considered to make a strategic contribution on an international scale.
This achievement is an important step for Mardin Artuklu University to become a leading reference point in the field of sustainable agricultural technologies in the international scientific world.
