ABOUT THE DAPERTMENT HORTICOLTURE

The primary objective of our Department of Horticulture is to educate agricultural engineers who are committed to scientific principles and values, benefit from contemporary science and technology, are capable of analyzing problems related to fruit, vegetable, vineyard, and ornamental plant cultivation from an engineering perspective, and can generate knowledge across all stages from production to harvest, post-harvest processes, and marketing, as well as apply this knowledge in practice. In addition, the department is dedicated to contributing to the welfare of society and the development of the agricultural sector through its expertise in scientific research, education, and service.

The Department of Horticulture conducts its educational activities with a focus on major agricultural issues such as climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and food security at both regional and national levels. Teaching is based on sustainable production systems, the conservation of local varieties, and the principles of organic and good agricultural practices. The agro-ecological diversity of Mardin, its traditional production culture, and the potential of region-specific species (such as olive, grape, fig, almond, and pomegranate) provide students with a unique field experience for practical training.

Our department carries out education and research not only in the main production areas of viticulture, vegetable growing, fruit growing, and ornamental plant cultivation but also in fields such as plant breeding, biotechnology, irrigation, fertilization, integrated crop management, post-harvest technology, storage, and product quality. Through practical courses, laboratory studies, and field applications, students are enabled to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice.

The Department of Horticulture offers a student-centered undergraduate education that encourages critical thinking, supports scientific research skills, and is delivered by faculty members who are experts in their fields. During their education, students are expected to gain competencies such as reading and analyzing scientific articles, preparing projects, and developing technical reporting skills.

In conclusion, the province of Mardin, with its rich agricultural potential, extensive farmland, favorable climate, and traditional knowledge, is an important center for horticultural production. By blending this potential with academic knowledge, our Department of Horticulture provides students with a strong professional foundation and aims to equip its graduates with the qualifications necessary to work in various fields such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, local governments, universities, research institutions, private agricultural enterprises, nurseries, and the ornamental plants sector.
