T.R. MARDİN ARTUKLU UNIVERSITY

HISTORY

Our faculty was established with the decision no. 200/1595 dating 04.04.2011 and named as “Faculty of Theology”. Later, with the legal decision of Council of Ministers no. 2016/8700 dating 14.03.2016, our faculty’s name was changed as FACULTY OF ISLAMIC SCIENCES.

Mardin in which our university is situated and people of different tribes, civilizations, religions and cultures live harmoniously is counted as one of the most important and archaic cities of Gezira satate. Every religion emerging in the region in ancient history existed in this city. This diversity of cultures, religions and tribes has caused a city of mosaic to arise.

After the arrival of Artuqids and later Ak Koyunlus to the Mardin and its environment, Turks arrived too and city’s wealth increased a lot. Thus, a society consisting of Syriacs, Kurds, Arabs and Turks who lived together for centuries, knew each other's languages and spoke three or even four languages when necessary has shaped.

We believe that this faculty, which aims to restore the civilization together, will be beneficial for our country, province and region, just as the cooperation of Muslim, Sabian and Christian scholars who worked together in Beytul-hikma, under the auspices of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad in the first periods constructing Islamic Civilization, which enlightened the world.

Our faculty aims to undertake an important responsibility in terms of contributing to universal values from local values, presenting and transferring Middle East’s wealthy sociocultural, political accumulation to World, in line with our university’s vision. It is our academic and ethical responsibility to blend this ancient tradition with the new, to shape the past mind codes and thoughts by creating new forms while looking for the better, but not denying the tradition.

In spite of dizzying technological advances, the usual functional activity of social sciences continues. As humanity, we want to live in a world where religion and religious values are given great importance. We believe that the new generation and the academic mind-set, whose level of consciousness is increasing and gradually gaining a "questioning" feature, will undertake new researches by considering the effectiveness of Islam. Today, many people who feel mentally uneasy for one reason or another turn to religion in order to find solutions to their problems. To give a healthy direction to this tendency depends on the training of well-equipped scientists who have understood the essence of religion and know the resources. Otherwise, there is always the risk that some groups and movements in the name of religion and religious values may sometimes use false and unfounded information to use people for their own purposes. It is accepted by almost all religions that most individual and social problems in the world can only be solved by the guidance of divine revelation. Furthermore, it is a known fact that experts trained at academic level in the field of religion in general and Islam in particular are needed. For this reason, it is necessary to bring an initiative in the field of religion as a part of people's efforts to get to know each other in our country.

As faculty of Islamic Sciences; our main aim is to raise theologists who can produce and transfer knowledge at national and international level by conducting research in Basic Islamic Sciences, Islamic History and Arts, Philosophy and Religious Studies; who love their country, nation and profession; have internalized the ideal of being beneficial to society and humanity, can think systematically, consistently and critically, approach people with empathy, have ethical and aesthetic values, are faithful, knowledgeable, tolerant, enlightened and professionally competent.

Mardin is a city with a face open to changes and unfamiliar. In this sense, there is a special national and international interest in the city. Our faculty will also have the capacity to attract academicians and students within this framework. Mardin Artuklu University has very important advantages in terms of different cultural diversity in which it exists. Located in a city where different faiths live in peace and tolerance, the Faculty of Islamic Sciences within the body of Mardin Artuklu University will have very important gains to and from this cultural environment. It will make maximum use of this cultural environment where different beliefs and languages are hosted, and in addition, it will make important contributions to this environment. Faculty of Islamic Sciences also has the advantages of being located in Mardin, which has very close borders to different countries. We think that in Mardin, which is a centre of attraction with its historical texture, the undergraduate program of 100% Arabic Islamic sciences will make its importance felt as soon as possible and will be included among the first choices of both students and academicians.

Our faculty care about student Exchange programmes that students can gain experiences in an international platform. In this sense, we accept students from other countries and send our successful students abroad for language courses with the help of Mardin Faculty of Islamic Sciences Charity and other non-governmental organizations.
