Mardin Artuklu continues to play a pioneering role with its Social Awareness Projects and course curricula, implementing an exemplary program in Turkey for motorcycle training, an area that attracts significant interest from young people in Mardin Artuklu, who are also frequently victims of traffic accidents.
Mardin Artuklu University made history in higher education in Turkey by offering the elective course “Basic Motorcycle Training: Safe Riding Techniques” in its joint elective course pool.
The course, taught by Dr. Beyhan Özgür, Assistant Professor at the University's Faculty of Sports Sciences and also a Basic Control and Riding Techniques Instructor at the Turkish Motorcycle Federation (TMF), attracted significant interest from students studying in different faculties and departments.
MAU Faculty of Sports Sciences Assistant Professor Beyhan Özgür stated that the elective course curriculum, titled “Basic Motorcycle Training: Safe Riding Techniques,” consists of both theoretical and practical training on topics such as the technical structure of motorcycles, balance and control exercises, urban and rural riding techniques, cornering dynamics, emergency braking, and the use of protective equipment. Dr. Beyhan Özgür, Assistant Professor at the MAÜ Faculty of Sports Sciences, stated that the main objective of the course is to develop safe riding awareness among students, increase traffic awareness, and strengthen the technical skills of individuals interested in motor sports within an academic framework.
Referring to TÜİK 2024 data, Beyhan Özgür stated that 1,228 people lost their lives and 109,832 were injured in 123,675 motorcycle accidents in our country, emphasizing that these figures once again highlight the importance of education-based awareness efforts.
Özgür pointed out that this course, which is included in a university curriculum for the first time in Turkey, is a pioneering application both academically and socially. He stated that Mardin Artuklu University's initiative is not only a project that supports motor sports at an academic level but also an important social responsibility project that contributes to traffic safety.
It was also noted that MAÜ plans to transform this course into an application and research center in the coming periods, as well as conduct scientific research on driving performance, fatigue, attention, and safe driving behaviors.
