Another important project has been implemented at the Mardin Artuklu University Application Garden with the vision of preserving the thousands of years of agricultural heritage of Mesopotamia.
Olive planting took place on approximately 5 acres of land with the participation of faculty members and students from Mardin Artuklu University's Kızıltepe Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. As part of this process, Gemlik, one of Turkey's leading national varieties, and Arbequina, a variety known worldwide for its high yield and adaptability, were introduced to the soil.
The olive planting study provided a significant research infrastructure for both the conservation of local genetic resources and the scientific study of the performance of international varieties in Mesopotamian ecology.
Prof. Dr. Yusuf Doğan, Dean of Kızıltepe Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, commented on the significance of the study:
“Mesopotamia is one of the regions where agricultural history began. The olive planting we are carrying out here today is not just a practical activity; it will provide our students with experience in all stages of agricultural production, strengthen our research capacity, and contribute scientifically to regional olive cultivation. As a faculty, we will continue our efforts to develop sustainable agriculture, the adaptation of new varieties, and the development of practical training.”
Mardin Artuklu University Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar emphasized that the university's work is guided by the 6T vision, which provides academic support for regional values. He said, "Our university has a vision that combines the ancient agricultural identity of Mesopotamia with a scientific approach. Today's olive planting is an exemplary project that serves both regional development and academic productivity. With these studies, in which our students actively participate in the field, we are increasing our capacity for application in agricultural sciences and contributing to the preservation of the region's potential products into the future. As Artuklu University, we combine the spirit of these ancient lands with our scientific institutional culture and innovative agricultural approach." Özcoşar expressed his gratitude to the entire academic and technical team who contributed to this project, as he does in every step that serves nature, science, and regional development.
