ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Midwife is defined as a person who, after qualifying to enter a midwifery education program, successfully completes this program and is registered or legally authorized to practice the profession.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a midwife as "a person who has been certified to provide the necessary care and advice during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, to conduct normal deliveries under their own responsibility, and to care for the newborn."

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) describes a midwife as "a responsible and trusted professional who, in partnership with women, provides the required support, care, and advice during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, conducts deliveries under their own responsibility, and provides care for the newborn and infant."

The Midwifery Department at Mardin Artuklu University School of Health was established in 2009 and has been granting undergraduate degrees since 2014. On April 17, 2019, under Presidential Decree No. 30749 published in the Official Gazette, the School of Health was transformed into the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Midwifery Department offers a four-year (eight-semester) undergraduate program, providing education and training for students to become professional midwives. Our department’s goal is to train fully equipped graduates who can work independently, embrace lifelong learning, and elevate the midwifery profession through scientific research, in line with the country's needs.

The Midwifery Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences currently has 2 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors (PhD), and 3 Research Assistants. As of the 2024-2025 Fall semester, the number of enrolled students is 343.
