HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY

The Department of Anthropology at Mardin Artuklu University was founded in 2009 within the Faculty of Letters. The bachelor's degree program, which consists of a one-year English preparatory course and a four-year bachelor's degree program, started education in the 2010-2011 academic year. The Department of Anthropology pursues an educational strategy that emphasizes the vision of social-cultural anthropology. In addition, our department also offers courses and scientific studies in the fields of physical anthropology and paleoanthropology.

DEPARTMENT SCORE AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The Department of Anthropology admits students according to the Equal Weight (EA) score type in the YKS results. Because our curriculum is 30% English, students accepted into our undergraduate program must complete one year of English preparation unless they are exempt from English proficiency.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Our graduates can work as researchers in universities, institutions and organizations of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (HAGEM, museums, etc.), the State Planning Organization, the Turkish Statistical Institute, TRT, municipalities, women and family research centers and non-governmental organizations. Research companies, media organizations, organizations working in the field of ergonomics, consultancy firms, advertising companies and social responsibility projects are the main areas in which they work. Recently, they have also begun working in corporate human resources, strategic marketing, public relations and customer service departments. In particular, human resource management and marketing practices that deal with consumer behavior have become areas where anthropology graduates should work.

INTERNSHIP AND APPLIED EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Our department's educational curriculum does not include any internship requirements. However, our students who wish to do an internship to advance their careers are also informed and instructed about internship opportunities in museums or non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, as part of the Erasmus+ exchange program, our students can benefit from internship mobility in European nations throughout the three-month summer season, provided they complete the requirements.

POSTGRADUATE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Our department graduates can continue their education in the Anthropology Thesis Master's program at Mardin Artuklu University The Institute for Graduate Educational Studies, which is staffed by full-time faculty members who are experts in their fields and have extensive academic experience, as well as academic infrastructure and laboratory facilities. Candidates who are interested in scientific fields and want to specialize in them can improve their knowledge and skills, advance their academic career in their chosen field, and contribute to the field of anthropology through their studies by applying to the Anthropology Thesis Master's program, which is announced as part of the postgraduate recruitment process at the end of each academic year.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS

When the prerequisites are met, our students can participate in the Erasmus+ and Mevlana exchange programs. Erasmus is a student exchange program administered by the European Union. Students may also complete an internship at a business or organization in another nation that participates in the program. The Anthropology Department at Mardin Artuklu University provides students with the chance to spend a semester or a year abroad at one of its partner universities through the student exchange program. Since 2014, our Department has been an active participant in the European Union Erasmus+ Program. Students enrolled in the Erasmus+ Programme can stay at universities with whom we have partnership agreements for three months or the entire academic year. Erasmus students can benefit from the EU mobility award. After the Erasmus exchange term, students must return to their home universities and finish their programs.

We have connections with the following universities as part of the Erasmus+ exchange program: 

Eberhard Karls Universitat Tubingen / The University of Tübingen 

Furthermore, through the Mevlana exchange program, our students can study at any higher education institution in the world, regardless of geographical region, as long as departments agree. Cooperation agreements with foreign universities are ongoing as part of the Mevlana exchange program, and our students will benefit from this program by gaining international experience.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND STUDENT COMMUNITIES

The MAU Anthropology Society, which is actively involved in the Department of Anthropology, arranges a variety of events and activities each year. The Anthropology Society presents a discussion series called "Anthropology Talks" to encourage students to concentrate in various fields of study, with the participation of field experts. The Anthropology Society operates as a student community, organizing a variety of activities to help students socialize and bond.

DOUBLE MAJOR AND MINOR OPPORTUNITIES.

The Department of Anthropology has had a double major and minor program with the Department of Psychology since the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year.
