Dr. Serdar Aydin (ORCID: 0000-0001-6445-8879) is a registered professional architect and a design researcher. Having received his PhD from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, he currently teaches at Mardin Artuklu University in Turkey. His research interests are in parametric and algorithmic design, digital heritage, BIM, virtual and augmented environments, and smart cities. Delivering content on digital heritage to the European public, Serdar is an associate partner for REACH (Re-designing access to CH for a wider participation, (re)use and management of European culture).

As a practicing architect, he has experience in Turkey (Sena Proje, Aytemiz Mimarlık) and Hong Kong (Zaha Hadid Architects). In academia, his teaching experience includes digital design methods, digital representations, parametric design and design studios at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Tıtled “Decoding Kashgar: A Digital Design Approach to Steer and Diversify Creative Engagement in Digital Heritage,” his PhD thesis presents digital environments translating heritage into game platforms where engaging experiences were designed and developed while defending the role of participation and creativity.

Serdar's research has been rewarded with Postgraduate Student Award for Digital Research Excellence by ResBaz at Victoria University of Wellington (2016), Design Research Society Student Bursary (DRS, 2015), Young CAADRIA Award (2015) and Reaching-Out Award (Hong Kong Government Education Bureau, 2014) as well as Best Presentation awards (CAADfutures 2017 and ASA ANZAScA 2014).

He is the Guest-Editor of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050) and reviews articles submitted for Architectural Science Review (ISSN: 0003-8628), International Journal of Architectural Computing (ISSN: 1478-0771) and Automation in Construction (ISSN: 0926-5805).
