• The panel whose subject is “violence against women and suicides” arranges..

The panel arranged by Güneydoğum Association, whose subject “violence against women and suicides” was performed on 18th November 2011 in the Hall of Vali Kılıçlar in Mardin Artuklu University

The opening speeches were made by Duygu Sucuka, the head of Güneydoğum Association, Prof. Dr. Serdar Bedii Omay, the Chancellor of our university, Lawyer M. Beşir Ayanoğlu, the mayor of Mardin,Turhan Ayvaz, the governor of Mardin, Gönül Bekin Şahkulubey, MP of Mardin, and Association Prof. Aşkın Asan, the vice-minister of family and social politics.

In opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Serdar Bedii Omay, by expressing that it is sorry to say that the southeast is on the top of the list in terms of women’s issues, explained several factors lying beneath women’s issues as follows: “The intensive traumatic effects stemming from the war which has lasted for 30 years and left 50 thousand people dead, the deformations in the roles which cast for man and woman; the fact that the concept chastity is regarded only as responsibility of women; The fact that our region has differences in terms of social relationships; In some parts of our region women are regarded as the ones who only give birth, as servant of men and they are valuable only if they perform these duties and so on..”

Association Prof. Aşkın Asan, the vice-minister of family and social politics uttered that they have done a lot of works in order to prevent violence against women. She said that women are exposed to violence coming from not only their husbands but also from their fathers, bridegrooms, close friends and that they take into consideration these in the new arrangements.

After the opening speeches, the panel started. Nihat Eri, the 22nd term MP of Mardin, Prof. Dr. Aytekin, the vice-chancellor and the head of department of psychiatry of Dicle University, Assistant Prof. Zülküf Kara, the head of department of sociology of Mardin Artuklu University, Halime Ünaldı, research assitant of Batman University and Fatime Yalınkılıç, teaching staff of Siirt University participated the panel as speakers.
